The National Transportation Safety Board (NSTP) in the US has launched an investigation into the cause of a fire that burned for five days in the 2.7km long Howard Street tunnel in Baltimore. It is believed that a train car derailed causing a tanker loaded with flammable cargo to ignite causing the 800°C fire. Already under attack were the lack of disaster plans, with Baltimore’s Fire Department saying such an incident was "too far fetched" to require such plans. The city’s Department of Public Works with operator CSX have inspected the tunnel and said there is no fear of collapse.
