The European Union is to fund a road tunnel near the Greek-Bulgarian border to avoid disturbing bears which roam the mountains in the region, officials in Sofia said recently. EU experts proposed the tunnel after protests by a Greek ecologist group known as Artourous said that an overground road would split up two bear colonies in the Rhodopes Mountains. The tunnel will cost $5.2-$7.3m and will delay by two years the opening of a new border post between the two countries.
