Hong Kong’s MTR Corp has signed a memorandum of understanding with Beijing Infrastructure Investment Company and Beijing Capital Group to build and operate Beijing’s 16bn yuan (US$1.95bn) metro Line 4.

Beijing vice-mayor Zhang Mao said: “The MTRC has a strong management team and a proven business operation. It would be meaningful co-operation to raise both the management and operational standard of the metro here.”

Work involves the development of a 28.7km underground metro line from South Fourth Ring Road to the Xicheng and Haidian districts. Construction of the line will be completed by the time the 2008 Beijing Olympics takes place.

Line 4 is one of several underground rail links that will be built in Beijing by 2008. Others include the 28km Line 5; a 4km Olympic metro line and the 19km long Ba-Tong metro line.
