Webuild broke through on the southbound drive of the 1.2km road tunnel in March.
The Roseto 1 tunnel is part of the Ionian highway in southern Italy, being built for Italy’s state road agency, ANAS.
Work on the tunnel began in 2020.
Webuild’s Mega Lot 3 contract covers a 38km section of the highway. It includes 10km of tunnels – three rock tunnels and 11 cut and cover tunnels – and 7km of viaducts. The section will contribute to connecting the Ionian coasts of Calabria, Basilicata and Puglia.
In recent weeks, Webuild’s first two construction site operator courses were launched in Calabria, taking on 45 young and unemployed people from the region. It is part of Webuild’s programme to hire 10,000 people by 2026, 80% of them from southern Italy.
