Excavation of the western tunnel of the Brenner Base Tunnel has just 1km to go.

TBM Flavia, launched from the Lot H61 Mules 2-3 site in April 2019, has completed 13.3km of the 14.3km drive.

The 200m-long TBM is working under an overburden of 1,200m.

“We are about to excavate the last kilometre for TBM Flavia; once completed, all excavation works on the line tunnels at the Mules construction site will be finished,” said Alessandro Marottoli, director of proceedings for the construction lot.

A consortium of Webuild, Ghella, Cogeis and PAC has been operating three TBMs on this lot.

TBM Serena was launched in May 2018 and reached the Brenner Pass in November 2021, after excavating 14km of the exploratory tunnel. TBM Virginia started boring the eastern main tunnel in May 2019 and broke through at the Italian-Austrian border in March 2023.

More than 218,000 rings for the tunnels were manufactured at the Isocell plant in Hinterrigger Segment production was completed in September this year.

In addition to TBM Flavia, four other TBMs are currently in operation for the BBT project: Ida (on the H41 Sill Gorge-Pfons construction site, in the western main tunnel moving southwards); Lilia (on the same construction site, moving southwards in the eastern main tunnel); Wilma and Olga (on the H53 Pfons-Brenner construction site moving northwards, in the western and eastern main tunnels respectively).
