Ansaldo Trasporti Sistemi Ferroviari SpA has been named by client, Brescia MobilitĂ  as preferred bidder for the design, construction, 2-year operation and 5-year maintenance of the Metrobus system in Brescia, a mid size city in Lombardy, Italy.

The company, in JV with Astaldi and Necso, beat off competition from contenders Alstom Transport, DaimlerChrysler Rail Systems and Siemens Transport International. AnsaldoBreda, with a bid of US$519M. The Metrobus is an 18km light metro scheme with one-third of the alignment underground.

Three shaft stations will be built in the city centre. The Metrobus will start in Stocchetta di Concesio, going south towards Casazza, Piazzale Kossuth and Viale Europa. Shortly before Kossuth, the line will go underground via a 7m deep cut and cover tunnel until reaching the Civil Hospita. From here the line will be constructed as bored tunnel for some 4km at a depth of 23m under the city centre, with stops in Marconi, Battisti, Verdi, Gramsci, and the central railway station. Currently details of diameter and machine type are unavailable. In Brescia Due, the Metrobus will reappear at grade and separate into two branches at Lamarmora. The first branch heads westward to La Volta, Duca degli Abruzzi, San Polo (two stations), San Polino and Sant’Eufemia with 2km in cut and cover. The second branch will head east to Rodi, Salgari, Orzinuovi (with two stations) and Fiera.

Work is to start in spring 2003 and commissioning is programmed for the spring of 2008.
