City officials in Brisbane, Australia, have agreed to pay US$4.76M to a joint venture between Japan’s Obayashi and Eroc to settle construction claims on a 4.5km long, 2.4m diameter sewerage tunnel between North Quay and Hamilton. The payments covered delays caused by poor ground conditions Eroc-Obayashi encountered while excavating a 3.6km long hard rock tunnel using a tunnel boring machine. Although about 100 boreholes were drilled along the tunnel alignment, Eroc Obayashi hit trouble at least nine times.
