At the British Tunnelling Society (BTS) meeting on October 21 1999, the James Clarke Memorial Medal was awarded to Colin MacKenzie, regional managing director, AMEC Tunnelling, for his outstanding contribution to the tunnelling Industry. Eric Snowdon announced the award in his final role as BTS chairman, stepping down after two successful years in office. He is succeeded as chairman by David Wallis, associate director of Halcrow, with the vice-chairmanship being filled by Peter South of AMEC
