Ambitious proposals have been announced by the Guangdong provincial authorities in southern China, for a 30km long tunnel across the Pearl River estuary between Zhuhai in the west and Shenzhen, which borders Hong Kong, in the east.

Guangdong vice-governor Ou Guangyuan confirmed that feasibility studies are being carried out. Speaking at the Guangdong Association of Directors, he said the tunnel would shorten the travelling time from the current two hours to just 30 minutes.

No project costs have been released but the scheme rivals proposals by Hong Kong entrepreneur Sir Gordon Wu, formally head of the Hopewell Holdings construction group, to build a bridge linking Hong Kong with Zhuhai and Macau.

Mr Ou announced the road tunnel as part of a massive expansion of infrastructure links in southern Guangdong which include additional expressways and light and heavy rail lines.
