The 9km two-way, six-lane tunnel will be built below the South China Sea. The bottom of the tunnel will be constructed 72.6m below the ocean surface. It is expected to be completed in 2016.
The tunnel is intended to reduce traffic issues currently experienced on the existing Haicang Bridge. It is part of a planned network of highways to improve logistics in the region, which is a focus of Taiwanese investment.
