Guangzhou city authorities in southern China are going ahead with plans to build the US$85M Zhoutouzui road tunnel under the Pearl River to ease the traffic congestion in the city.

The six-lane tunnel, which will be about 400metres long and 50 metres wide, will link the Zhoutouzui area in Guangzhou’s Haizhu district with Hualei Road in the Fangcun district. The scheme has been approved by the city government, although no timetable for the start of construction has been announced.

The tunnel will help relieve congestion at the Zhujiang road tunnel which handles about 100,000 vehicles a day, nearly double the capacity of 55,000 vehicles when it was opened in 1989.

The city government has also approved three other road tunnels in the Guangzhou, one of which is scheduled to start construction later this year.
