The fourth highly successful T&T International Chinese Tunnelling Symposium was held recently in Beijing.

The event was organised in joint venture with the Ministry of Railways with the support of the Chinese Tunnelling Society.

The significance of this annual event was highlighted by the participation of leading western manufacturers and the attendance of 150 influential Chinese delegates. Official sanction for the symposium was provided by a message of support from the vice minister of the Ministry of Railways, Cai Qinghua, delivered at the opening ceremony.

The message outlined the huge investment in road, rail, water and metro schemes now planned for cities throughout China, and the important part that the latest technologies from overseas will play in their successful completion.

New at this year’s symposium was the introduction of workshop sessions and the presence of a keynote speaker. The speaker was Professor Bernhard Maidl, head of the Institute of Structural Engineering and chair of Construction Technology, Tunnelling and Construction Management at Ruhr-University, Bochum. He is consulting professor to Tongji University, Shanghai.

Participating organisations from overseas comprised, Aliva/Sika; Atlas Copco; CarboTech/DMT; Herrenknecht; Ischebeck; Phoenix; Robbins; Svedala; and Volvo.

The fifth Chinese Tunnelling Symposium will be held next November in Beijing. A limited number of places is available and further details can be obtained from T&T International.
