On Thursday 2 April in the Chinese city of Guangzhou, construction work on a metro project collapsed leaving 100 people homeless, according to reports. The collapse took place at 8.10am at the Lijiao Station construction site on GuangzhouÕs Metro Line 3; no deaths or injuries have been reported.

Although vague in detail, Liu Guangwu, of the Gunagzhou Metro Corporation, described to local press how a metal frame collapsed resulting in damage to machinery and the tilting of a residential building. Evacuation of residents in the vicinity immediately took place and an investigation is being carried out into the cause of the collapse. Initial reports suggest that recent heavy rainfall in Guangzhou could have been a contributory factor. An inspection of all the metro construction sites was conducted the following day to allay concerns. Liu said the incident would not affect the project schedule of the Metro Line 3.
