China Railway Engineering Equipment Group (CREG) celebrated two TBM achievements last week.

On December 6, a CREG EPB TBM started excavating Türkiye’s Sariyer-Kilyos tunnel. The 13.65m-diameter machine was launched after 70 days of cavern assembly and commissioning.

The TBM is designed to operate at a maximum depth of 172m and navigate a minimum horizontal curve radius of 190m. To increase the efficiency, the TBM is equipped with a system for continuous mining.

The 7km-long tunnel, designed by Systra, will provide a direct link between İstanbul’s Third Bosphorus Bridge and southern parts of the city.

It is scheduled to open at the end of 2026.

In Hamburg, a CREG EPM TBM has completed tunnelling under the River Elbe for the Fernwärmetunnel Moorburg district heating project.

The 4.57m-diameter BM made a peak daily advance of 20m.
