The 3 September marked the completion of tunnelling works for Phase I of the Delhi metro with the breakthrough of the last tunnel section between Delhi main and Chawri Bazaar.

The milestone also marks completion of 70% of this phase overall. Talking to the local press, a spokesman for the Delhi Metro company said: “This breakthrough was an important milestone for us because the 4km stretch of hard soil and rock was making tunnelling difficult. So besides the rock tunnel boring machines and earth pressure balance machine, we also had to use the New Austrian Tunnelling Method.”
