The UK’s Docklands Light Railway (DLR) last month carried out geophysical investigation in partnership with Crossrail to confirm the feasibility of constructing its US$265M extension to Woolwich, that includes boring twin-tunnels under the Thames.

The DLR project consists of 2.5km of new line, a new station at Woolwich and the tunnels. In November 2003 a notice was issued for submission of expressions of interest from contractors.

The deadline was 23 January and DLR is now thought to be evaluating the documents. DLR’s engineers, Atkins, instructed Fugro Engineering Services to carry out ground investigation along its proposed route.

Crossrail’s investigations centre on a Thames crossing to the west of the DLR route. Advisers, Geotechnical Consulting Group, appointed Reynolds Geoscience and Osiris Projects to carry out the work.
