Based in Gothenburg, Sweden, Edvirt specialises in products and training courses based on its VR training technology for tunnelling and mining applications. Its acquisition by wholly-owned DSI subsidiary DSI Underground Smart complements DSI’s portfolio of intelligent digital solutions and services.

Although Edvirt will develop new services for DSI, it will also continue to operate as a standalone company and serve its international customer base. Operated by experienced mining and tunnelling engineers, trainers and software developers, Edvirt’s VR-based training and certification courses are designed to increase safety, enhance quality and reduce costs in underground operations.

Commenting on the acquisition, Michael Reich, CEO of DSI Underground, said: "Mining and tunnelling require efficient and intelligent digital solutions. DSI Underground Smart and Edvirt will be able to offer unmatched virtual training supporting safety and productivity across the underground development cycle."

In January 2021, Sandvik signed an agreement to acquire DSI Underground for around €943m (US$1.15bn) as part of a deal which will see DSI and Edvirt become part of Sandvik Mining and Rock Solutions. The transaction is expected to close by mid-2021 and is subject to relevant regulatory approvals.
