Last month’s highest floods in Ireland since 1924 have raised concerns over the designed depth of the US$400M port tunnel project in Dublin. Fears centre around the possible flooding of the tunnel in the event of a repetition of the high water levels.

A report from Dublin City Council officials was due as T&TI went to press that includes the flood height figures. If the report says the floods reached a level higher than the road and above the planned tunnel entrance, the tunnel will have to be raised in height to prevent potential flooding during future storms. According to the project director, the design change would not be costly and could be done very quickly. The Port Tunnel engineers want to get the exact figures before making any decision on re-designing the tunnel.
