A collapse in a railway tunnel in China left ten workers trapped inside.

Rescue workers were working around the clock in the search for the men, as T&T went to press.

The accident happened in Ulangab City, about 150km from the regional capital Hohhot and 400km from Beijing.

More than 300 rescuers and 60 machines were drilling into the rubble, hoping to improve ventilation and sending food and water, including two tonnes of milk, for the trapped workers.

Some 2000 cubic metres of rock and dirt caved in, according to an unnamed official with the region’s work safety administration.

Consultant experts, however, told a local news agency that supporting frameworks in the tunnel could shelter the workers and increase their chances of survival.

The tunnel is part of a railway being built to link Ulanqab City’s Jining District and Baotou City, Inner Mongolia.?

“We were working in the tunnel when gravel and dust began pouring down,” Li Tiying, one of the six survivors, told local media.??

“We ran, and cried out for everyone else to run with us.”??

When he had escaped to safety, Li said he took one last look at the tunnel and saw dim light inside. “But within seconds, the tunnel was sealed off by stones and sand.”
