Engineering consultancies Royal HaskoningDHV, Witteveen+Bos and Ramboll are tier one providers of design services and consultancy for tunnel projects. They say the collaboration will enable them to provide “world class multidisciplinary consultancy and technical advisory for the whole asset life cycle for tunnels – from early planning and feasibility, through to the final design, asset management and decommissioning planning and provisions”.

“I’m extremely pleased that our three companies have signed up to even closer collaboration. It means that clients will benefit from a comprehensive, state-of-the-art service offering, access to the most qualified tunnel specialists, and an unrivalled global track record spanning over three decades,” said Niek Joustra, director, business unit infrastructure at Royal HaskoningDHV

The trio say the new agreement will open up future project possibilities worldwide and build on the partnering and collaboration on the world’s longest immersed tunnel, the Fehmarnbelt connecting Denmark with Germany.

“Innovation is the cornerstone of our collaboration. As with our work on Fehmarnbelt, we will push current engineering standards to overcome complex technical challenges, unlock new opportunities, and create the best solutions in partnership with our clients,” said Rinze Herrema, manager, infrastructure engineering at Witteveen+Bos.

Asger Knudsen, executive director transport at Ramboll, said the three companies would also look to lead best practice in sustainability and resilience in tunnel engineering and design. This includes “a committed emphasis on regenerative design principles to reduce the environmental impact and increase the life span of existing and new tunnels, as well as the use of eco-friendly and recyclable materials, and a focus on preserving biodiversity”, he said.

The co-operation agreement brings together a combined workforce of more than 25,000 engineers.
