Road tunnel safety is the subject of a revised draft EU directive, which should be published by the end of this month. It followed consultations with road tunnel experts from EU member states, Switzerland and Norway.

The directive will be limited in application to the longer road tunnels on the trans European roads network.

Experts were invited to comment on the early technical proposals at a meeting with the European Commission in May. A cost to benefits study was also considered.

It is anticipated that the directive could be discussed by ministers at the EU transport council meeting in December.
