Tunnel construction is expected to begin in a few years, however Femern sees this as a good opportunity to assume responsibility for the port area. When the tunnel construction begins, the client’s supervisory organisation will be close to the construction sites to ensure that the contractors perform their work in line with the contracts both on land and at sea.
Femern also expects to use the port area for the VTS system, which the authorities plan to establish at Travemünde for navigational safety reasons. The Femern VTS system is scheduled to become operational one year before construction work on the tunnel begins in 2015.
During 2013, Femern’s major tasks will be to submit an application for regulatory approval in Germany and to submit material for Danish regulatory approval in the form of an Environmental Impact Assessment. The company will also draw up tender conditions for the contractors; contracting companies wishing to participate in the future tendering process must have applied to Femern for prequalification by 18 January 2013.
