Six databases containing vital information on fire safety design for tunnels were launched last month, following the catastrophic fires that ravaged the road tunnels of Mont Blanc (between France and Italy) and Tauern (Austria).

The Thematic Network ‘FIT – Fire in Tunnels’ was originally set up 18 months ago to establish and develop networking to optimise efforts on fire safety in tunnels. Its ambition is “to enhance the exchange of knowledge and develop a European consensus on fire safety for road, rail and metro tunnel infrastructures.”

In a bid to achieve these goals, FIT launched six consultable databases online at www.etnfit.net, which include: recent research projects; mapping of test site facilities; overview of numerical computer codes; data on safety equipment; assessment reports on fire accidents in tunnels; and mapping and overview of upgrade activities.

The databases include many features to make them efficient and easy to navigate.
