The decision comes as the Institution of Engineers, Malaysia (IEM) advised the International Tunnelling and Underground Space Association (ITA-AITES) that the physical conference could not proceed due to public health reasons stemming from the coronavirus pandemic.

Instead, IEM now intends to hold a virtual conference but advises that it is “not intending to provide a substantial refund of the monies received from sponsors, exhibitors and registrants”.

In response, ITA said that it expects IEM to provide “substantial refunds” to those parties “and will continue to work to achieve this outcome”. It added that it could support the concept of a virtual conference if the refund issue was successfully resolved.

The next World Tunnel Congress is due to be held on 16-19 May 2021 in Copenhagen, Denmark. Further details can be found at: http://www.wtc2021.dk/
