Tunnelling should start this month on the 2.5km long, 18m2 Frösunda cable tunnel in Stockholm, Sweden. Lemminkäinen Construction Ltd was awarded the contract in June, which also includes a 300m long, 27m2 access tunnel. The contract was subject to a positive decision from the environmental authorities; engineers will have to adhere to strict guidelines regarding the water table. Pregrouting the rock is one option, before the granite and gneiss is excavated using drill and blast. The US$6.4M project is designed to move existing overhead high voltage cables undeground to allow space for new housing above ground. Construction should be completed by November 2005.
