Transport Initiatives Edinburgh (tie) has appointed Fugro as ground investigation contractor to the Edinburgh Airport Rail Link (EARL).

Fugro was appointed following an intensive tendering process that ran earlier this year (T&TI October, p8). Susan Clark, project director of EARL, said: “Now that the EARL Bill is about to enter the Scottish Parliament we are moving on to a new stage of the process. The Geotechnical challenges of EARL cannot be underestimated and Fugro will play a key role in developing our understanding.”

EARL involves the construction of an underground station and 2.4km of tunnel underneath Edinburgh Airport. T&TI was told that the work would be carried out without any closure of the overlying runway or taxiways.

Christian Grundy of Fugro said: “We’re delighted that tie has appointed Fugro and we know we can meet the tasks they have set.”
