Concrete lining works were getting underway in both main tubes of the Grouft road tunnel in the Grand-Duche de Luxembourg as excavation finished for a rescue tunnel to link them. Geology along the drives includes marls, swelling clay and sedimentary strata, with groundwater. Breakthroughs on the almost 3km long main bores were over the last few months, their widths being 10m-13.5m.

In addition to the rescue tunnel, the twin tubes are linked by 10 cross passages. Contractor on the US$234.8M scheme is a JV of Wayss & Freytag, Max Bogl, Galere, Tralux, and Felix Giogetti. The design team is Luxconsult with Lombardi. The 54 month civils phase is to finish mid-2009 for the road to open in 2011.
