Shanghai Tunnel Engineering Company (STEC) has holed through on the first of two 2.6km long tunnel drives for a new road tunnel under the Huangpu River in Shanghai. The 11.36m diameter link through China’s commercial capital will connect Xiangyin Road in Shanghai’s Puxi district with the northeast section of Pudong. The tunnel is expected to be ready to open to traffic by early 2006. When it is completed the tunnel will be the sixth crossing under the Huangpu River.
