hyperTunnel Ltd and hyperTunnel Holdings were placed into administration on July 23 and Opus LLP was appointed as the administrator.

hyperTunnel was launched in 2018 by Steve Jordan and Jeremy Hammond. Using proven technologies from other industries, they aimed to develop a new approach to building tunnels and underground schemes that was faster, safer, lower cost and more sustainable than current techniques.

In 2022 hyperTunnel launched exclusive distributor licensing agreements, and in October last year signed an agreement with AmcoGiffen.

In October 2022 the company revealed the world’s first robot-built tunnel – a pedestrian-scale tunnel constructed as part of a research project for Network Rail.

In March 2023, a project to build an underpass trialling hyperTunnel’s technology was awarded funding from Europe’s first purpose-build rail innovation facility. The £25,000 grant from the Global Centre of Rail Excellence (GCRE) in Wales would fund a feasibility study into building an underpass at GCRE using hyperTunnel’s approach.

T&TI has contacted the administrators for further comment.
