Work has started on a $6.7M project to protect traffic on the E6 in Norway at Illhullin from avalanches and landslides that plague the area. The scheme involves carving a 1km long tunnel to transport ice and slush away from the road. Contractor, Totalprosjekt is currently blasting rock for access to the main tunnel which will be construction by personnel from the Norwegian National Road Administration. Actual tunnel construction will start this month and is scheduled to be completed late in the autumn of 2002.
