A major Indian hydroelectric power project, consisting of 45km of tunnels, got off the ground last month following government approval on 6 September 2002.

Parbati Hydro Electric Project Stage II is one of three major projects estimated to provide a total of 2070MW to a regional potential of 4271MW. Stage II is the first to be built, construction of which began following the contract awards halfway through September.

Stage II involves the construction of a 90m high dam on the Parbati river at Pulga, and a 31.37km long 6m diameter head race tunnel.

Details will be published in October’s issue of T&TI
