It is the latest efforts to stop militants and smugglers crossing the heavily policed Israeli border. Local and international media has reported that the depth of the structure’s foundations will stretch to “dozens of metres below ground”. Recent tunnels into Israel have been 30-40m deep.
The concrete barrier will stretch for 37 miles (59km) and will reportedly cost around USD 600M. It will be equipped with sensors to detect tunnelling activities.
