Boring is due to begin this month on the $28M, 2.7km long single tube Monte Zucco railway tunnel between Treviso and Calalzo in Italy. The new tunnel will replace the existing line and will provide a significant improvement of the alignment.

Contractor joint venture (JV) Seli/Monti of Italy will use an 8m diameter NFM EPBM to excavate the 50.62m² tunnel through gypsum and dolomite. The machine will erect a steel- reinforced concrete segment universal ring with a 7.7m od. The ring thickness of 350mm leaves the required 7m i.d.

The contract was awarded by client Ferrovie Dello Stato (Italian Railway). The JV subsequently put detailed design of the tunnel with Italian consultant Geodata.

Completion of the tunnel is due in February 2002 with the entire contract including railway superstructure installations set for a May 2002 finish.
