Construction has started on the 7.2km long Taohuapu Tunnel on the Xi’an-Hefei railway. The structure, due for completion in 2003, will be the second longest on a major railway connecting the ancient Chinese capital of Xi’an. Work on the 23bn yuan, 955km long railway started in May and is due to finish in five year’s time.
