In Pakistan, the North West Frontier Province (NWFP) Governor, Syed Iftikhar Hussain Shah, has invited the Aga Khan Foundation and European Community to co-operate with the provincial government in a phased completion of the 9km long Lowari tunnel project, worth $130M, in the Chitral District. He said the project was ignored by earlier governments but the present government, despite lack of resources, had decided to pursue it. The Chitral remains cut off from the rest of the country for six months a year and completion of the Lowari tunnel would make it accessible all year, boosting tourism, the Governor said.
