The S$530m (£308m) contract is part of the Cross Island Line Phase 2 (CRL2) project.

In December 2022 the JV was awarded the CRL2 contract for the design and construction of the bored tunnel between Fairways Drive and Sin Ming Walk.

Currently, Shanghai Tunnel Engineering is in the final stages of completing Katong Park and Bayshore stations on the Thomson-East Coast Line (TEL), having also completed the construction of TEL Shenton Way station. Obayashi Corporation previously constructed the North East Line Dhoby Ghaut station.

CR14, or Turf city station, is an underground station on Turf Club Road. The construction works are expected to be challenging because of the varying soil conditions in the area, in particular the harder ground conditions of the Bukit Timah granite formation which requires the use of specialised techniques for excavation.

Construction is expected to start in the third quarter of this year.

The CRL is Singapore’s eighth MRT line and will be entirely underground. It is being constructed in three phases. Announced in 2019, CRL Phase 1 is 29km long, and comprises 12 stations. Construction works have commenced and are expected to be completed by 2030. CRL Phase 2, announced in September 2022, is approximately 15km and comprises six underground stations. Passenger services are scheduled to commence in 2032.

Engineering studies for the CRL Phase 3 are ongoing.
