Macau’s Direcção dos Serviços de Obras Públicas (DSOP) has announced that the tender process for the design and construction of the Grand Taipa Tunnel and its southern link is now officially open.
As per the tender notice issued by the public works department, construction firms interested in the project must submit their proposals by 11 December.
The development of the Taipa Grande Tunnel project is divided into two sections. The first section covers the main tunnel and its southern link, which has passed the initial qualification stage and is now open for proposal submissions.
The second section will focus on constructing the northern link, which includes an 890m viaduct connecting the tunnel to the Macau Bridge, reported the Macau Daily Times.
Construction for the Taipa Grande Tunnel is expected to begin in Q2 2025. The 600m tunnel will connect the Macau Bridge to Cotai, providing an alternative route that avoids the Taipa Ferry Terminal and Macau International Airport.
For the first section of the project, five pre-qualified companies have been invited to submit their bids. The DSOP has specified that these companies must provide comprehensive execution plans detailing the safety measures and strategies to minimise traffic disruption during construction.
The second section involves constructing a new flyover that will connect the border-crossing Macau Bridge to the northern entrance of the Taipa Grande Tunnel.
This elevated roadway will extend approximately 890m and will include four lanes in each direction. It will be built over parklands and will reach a maximum height of 23m above the light rail line.
Due to the technical requirements and the potential impact on traffic flow, DSOP has requested that bidders provide thorough execution plans to guarantee the project’s accuracy and safety.
According to officials, the elevated structure presents several engineering challenges, and any missteps could have significant consequences for traffic management and safety.
