Work is due to start in 2000 on construction of the Thessaloniki Metro in northern Greece. The 9.4km underground line includes 3km of bored tunnels, 6.4km of cut+cover and 14 stations.

In February this year, a concession contract for design, construction, financing and operation of the metro was awarded by the Greek Council of Ministers to a JV of Bouygues (57.5%); Bombardier (30%); VIA-GTI (7.5%); and SystraSofretu (5%). The JV has 16 months from the date the contract was awarded to finalise funding agreements with the banks.

The work is worth approximately $508m and construction will last five years. After completion, the line will be operated for a 20 year period under the supervision of VIA-GTI and Systra. Preliminary works, including geotechnical investigations are under way.

The Thessaloniki Metro will be fully automatic. It will be able to carry 18 000 people/h in each direction at peak times.
