The Herald Mexico newspaper has reported that new rail routes are planned in the country to expand the rail and metro systems in Mexico City.

An agreement was reached in November between the capital’s mayor and the state governor to build two new suburban lines to link the sprawling metropolitan areas surrounding the city. The first would cover the northern region running from Ecatepec in the northeast to the Martín Carrera metro station in the north of the capital. The second line is planned from Chalco southeast of the city to the La Paz metro station on the city outskirts.

The metro system is confined to the city limits. Whilst there are no plans to directly extend the metro, these new routes would increase the flexibility and range of the network by feeding into and out of the metro network.

T&TI was told by a consultant who has an interest in the scheme that although they did not know how much tunnelling would be involved, it was probable there would be a tunnel component.
