Mobilisation for construction of Phase 1 of the $320M Line 1 of the Turin Metro in Italy is due to start this month.

Reallocation of utilities will be followed by station construction in preparation for TBM boring on Lots 3 and 4 of the first phase which is scheduled to begin at the end of this year.

The 9.6km long Phase 1 has been divided into seven lots. Lot 1 is for depot construction, Lot 2 for cut and cover tunnel sections, Lots 3, 4 and 5 for bored tunnels plus stations, Lot 6 for m&e and Lot 7 for finishing works.

Project client, the Intercommunal Transport Authority of the Province of Turin, has awarded Lot 3 to the JV Impresa Grassetto SpA/Ing. Rodio & C. Imp. Costra. Spec. SpA/Cogefa/Consorzio Cooperative Construzioni/Garboli Conicos. This section involves construction of 3.2km of tunnel with five stations and four service shafts. Lot 4 has been awarded to the joint venture Grandi Lavori Fincosit SpA/SELI SpA. The 2.6km long tunnel section includes five stations and five service shafts.

The tunnels on Lots 3, 4 and 5 will be driven by three 7.7m diameter shield EPBMs at depths of between 10-25m. These will erect a 300mm thick pre-cast segmental lining. The TBM manufacturer has yet to be assigned. The completed system will be a single tube, twin track configuration.

The $154M, Phase 2 of Line 1 of the Turin metro will extend the system from Porte Nuova to the Congresses and Exhibition Centre of Lingotto. The tunnel will be 4.5km long and includes seven stations. One or two shield EPBMs are envisaged to construct the tunnels. A supervision contract is now under bid with site works slated for a March 2002 start.

Finally the two sections will make up a single line together with extensions, to Rivoli (to the north) and Nichelino (to the south). The complete Turin Metro Line 1 project is on schedule for opening in November 2005, in anticipation of the 2006 Winter Olympics.
