The 3.85m-diameter Terratec machine is operated by J Kumar-MEPL JV on the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation project.

Upgrading Mumbai’s sewerage infrastructure involves constructing two priority sewer tunnels (PST-1 & PST-2) to improve wastewater collection, treatment, and disposal processes.

Terratec has supplied two TBMs for the project: the 3.85-diameter rock slurry TBM for the 5.8km PST-1 and a 3.14m-diameter rock EBP TBM for the 4.7km PST-2.

Terratec says the rock slurry TBM, the smallest of its kind in India, has demonstrated impressive excavation rates, achieving up to 18 rings per day in fresh rock.

It employs a 5+1 universal type segment design, featuring reinforced concrete segments 200mm thick and 1200mm wide. The TBM also features a Terratec slurry transportation system and slurry treatment plant.

The 3.14m-diameter rock EBP TBM for PST-2 was lowered into Malad Pumping Station’s launch shaft on July 20

The 3.14m-diameter rock EBP TBM for PST-2 was lowered into Malad Pumping Station’s launch shaft on July 20. It is one of the smallest diameter EPBMs to be deployed in India.

The MSDP involves constructing shafts and upstream connections to reduce wastewater flow into existing collector sewers, and decommissioning pumping stations. It will connect Don Bosco Junction in Borivali West to the Malad Waste Water Treatment Facility, and the Oshiwara Bus Depot to the Malad Pumping Station.

The treatment plants are projected to recycle 2,464 million litres of sewage per day, significantly reducing water pollution and improving the quality of Mumbai’s Mithi and Oshiwara rivers.
