Construction is almost complete at Mumbai’s first twin tunnels, being built as part of the four-lane Eastern Freeway project between Anik and Panjarpol in Maharashtra, India.

The 17m wide and 10m high twin tunnels have four carriageways each. The tunnels will start from Ashok Nagar at the foot of a hill in Bhabha Atomic Research Centre (BARC) and end at Gautam Nagar near Panjarpol. Estimated to cost INR 610M (USD 13M), the first 100m of the 450m tunnels, which are being dug through a hill in the BARC area, will be ready soon. The Eastern Freeway project has a 12km elevated stretch from P D’Mello Road to Mumbai Port Trust Road. The freeway will then join the Eastern Express Highway via Anik-Panjarpol Link Road near Wadala.

Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) spokesman Dilip Kawathkar stated that they have excavated 350m of the left tunnel and 250m of the right tunnel and soon a cross section of 100m in both tunnels will be concreted.

The tunnel will connect to the tallest flyover in the city, work on which is also underway.
