The 6.2-mile tunnel, running between Golden Glades Transit Center and Sunny Isles Beach at Newport Pier, would have seven stations and be able to transport more than 7,500 people per hour.

The estimated cost is US$185-220m and construction is expected to take less than three years.

The plans, which have been submitted for regulatory approval, also allow for the option to add extensions to the North Miami Beach Loop that would include connections to Hard Rock Stadium and Florida International University’s Biscayne Campus.

The Boring Company’s loop systems use Tesla vehicles to transport passengers.

Last year the 1.7 mile-long Las Vegas Convention Centre loop opened. Work is now under way on the Vegas Loop and earlier this month the TBM broke through at Resorts World, laying the groundwork for the loop’s first station. The Vegas Loop is a 29-mile tunnel network with 51 stations along The Strip and will also serve the Allegiant Stadium and the University of Nevada. The Boring Company estimates it will carry up to 57,000 passengers per hour.

Bloomberg has reported that the company has also been given the go-ahead to build a tunnel research and development site at its headquarters near Austin, Texas.
