Two workers were killed but many more just escaped death when foundations failed in the open cut excavation for Chating station on Line 2 of the metro in Nanjing, China, at the end of May. The collapse happened as a gang of 13 workers were trying to strengthen the foundations, which had become weakened by heavy rain. Line 2 is a new metro link that is due for completion in 2009. The deaths follow the fatal collapse of a tunnel section at Line 10 metro in Beijing, in March (T&TI, March, p7).
