The application of numerical models for the solution of complex geotechnical engineering problems is now well established. Their role in verifying the results obtained from conventional analyses, especially in the cases where the validity of the latter is questionable, has been recognised. Topics covered in this latest symposium included: Constitutive relations for geomaterials; Modelling of instabilities and strain localisation in geomaterials; and Practical application of numerical techniques – tunnels and underground structures; piles foundations and anchors.
