Preliminary designs have been completed on the North Shore Connector in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, an extension of the city’s light rail system, including a 1.3km tunnel under Allegheny River.
Tenders will be called shortly on the $390M project that will extend Pittsburgh’s Light Rail Transit (LRT) 1.9km from Gateway Center Station, north to Allegheny station, via a station that will service PNC baseball park. Preliminary designs completed by the Boston office of consultants DMJM+Harris include a 7m diameter (approx.) twin bore section of 780m, and 520m of cut+cover. The remaining line will be elevated.
The Port Authority of Allegheny County will announce the successful construction bid mid to late 2003 with a construction start date shortly after. Construction should be completed by the end of 2006, and the line opened by the winter of 2007.
In what will probably be a separate package, according to Allen Biehler, consultant with DMJM+Harris, a 322m spur will also extend north to provide access to the David L. Lawrence Convention Center. The majority of this will be cut+cover subway.
