Promat has acquired Cafco International as part of its strategic growth in fire protection and high temperature insulation, including the tunnel sector. Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed.

Cafco has undertaken fire resistance engineering work on concrete linings for tunnels as well as helping to prevent steel and cast iron linings from weakening. Promat noted that Cafco has been involved in protecting more than 1Mm2 of tunnel linings.

Promat, which is part of Etex, a Belgian industrial group said that the acquisition would allow for synergistic benefits to be gained for product development, joint sales and international expansion. No financial estimates of the anticipated synergistic gains were given.

Late last year, Cafco International secured a US$3.8M contract to supply spray-applied passive fire protection for UK contractor Costain’s refurbishment of the Holmsdale road tunnel on the M25 orbital motorway outside London. The 18-month contract involves protection of 64,000m2 of surface area, including roof beams, diaphragm walls and a new central dividing wall (T&TI, May, p31-33)
