UK consultant Mott MacDonald has won a second commission to lead the detailed design of 4.5km of tunnels and three stations on the £90M (US$132M) phase 2 section of Malaysia’s new city Putrajaya’s monorail system. The award follows the consultant’s successful work on the phase 1 design of two underground stations and 1.1km of tunnel.
Putrajaya is a specially designed city located on an island surrounded by a lake, and is set to become Malaysia’s administrative centre for government, justice and diplomatic departments with around 330,000 residents. The city’s planned monorail will interchange with the country’s Express Rail Link, a high-speed system connecting Kuala Lumpur 20km to the north with the new airport 25km south.
The award includes the design of a submerged tube crossing the lake necessary to integrate the monorail with the country’s transport network. The tube will complete the underground section of Putrajaya’s monorail system.
The largely underground monorail system comprises two lines; the 12km long line 1 with 17 stations, and the 6km long Line 2 with six stations. Construction is nearing completion on the first phase of the underground system with five stations finished.
Mott MacDonald will work with the same team comprising local companies Sepakat Setia Perunding and Neuformation Architect.
The full system is planned to be operational in 2005 when the Malaysian Government hopes that 70% of Putrajayan commuters will travel by public transport.
