The Seattle City Council voted on Monday in favor of moving forward with the design planning of the Alaskan Way Viaduct bored tunnel replacement.

The council’s 8-1 approval of agreements submitted by the Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT) outlining their partnership on project provides the City of Seattle’s support on design, utility and right-of-way issues.

Seattle’s mayor, Mike McGinn, had already said he’d veto the agreements prior to Monday night’s vote. But the council’s president, Richard Conlin, said the council would likely override the veto.

These agreements will be affirmed with the state once the final Environmental Impact Statement and Federal Record of Decision are released, which is expected late this summer.
