Five options for rail, road, cycling and walking provision are proposed, including a new light rail tunnel and a road tunnel east of the existing Auckland Harbour Bridge; a new light rail tunnel west of the bridge; a new bridge adjacent to the existing bridge, with tunnelling to connect to a new section of State Highway 1; and two scenarios for a light rail, walking and cycling bridge and a road tunnel.
The new crossing spanning Waitemata Harbour will connect to the Auckland Light Rail network, which is currently under construction.
The project is aimed at easing congestion on Auckland Harbour Bridge, which carries about 200,000 vehicles a day.
The five scenarios are now open for public feedback and the government will confirm the preferred option in June.
New Zealanders go to the polls for a general election this year but prime minister Chris Hipkins said he was confident cross-party support for the project would secure its future whichever party formed the next government.
